On November 18, 2023, the renowned Uzbek orientalist, professor of America's Hofstra University, Doctor of History Elyor Karimov gave a lecture on "Sufi Sects in Central Asia" at Khazar University.
The event was attended by the staff of the Institute of Manuscripts named after Muhammad Fuzuli of ANAS, the Institute of History and the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, faculty members and students of Khazar University.
Nazakat Mammadli, director of Khazar University Mevlana Center for Literary and Philosophical Studies extended greetings to the guests and participants and said that the Sufi sects that arose in Central Asia influenced the creativity of Nasimi, Seyyid Yahya Bakuvi, Muhammad Fuzuli and other poets, and the formation of Azerbaijani philosophical thought. Even the great sufi poet of the 19th century Mir Hamza Sayyid Nigari Karabakhi noted that he was a spiritual follower of Bahaaddin Naqshbandi, who lived in Bukhara.
In his speech E. Karimov spoke about Yasaviism, Kubraism, Naqshbandism, and other sects that were formed in Central Asia and spread all over the world, their ideological foundations, their representatives, as well as the life path and activities of Yusif Hamedani, Ahmad Yesavi, Najmeddin Kubra, Ubeidullah Ahrar, Abdurrahman Jami and other geniuses. The lecture concluded with Dr. Karimov addressing participants' questions on the topic.
It's noteworthy that Professor E. Karimov is a UNESCO World Memory Register Sub-Committee member and the author of the UNESCO-published multivolume "History of Central Asian Civilizations."
