On January 18, 2023, on the occasion of the 33rd commemoration day of the January 20 tragedy, an event called "The importance of the events of January 20 for the new and modern era of Azerbaijan" was held at the initiative of the Department of History and Archeology. Rector of the university, assoc.prof Irada Khalilova, director of Public Relations and Media Alovsat Amirbeyli, faculty members of the department - doctors of philosophy on history Rukhsara Guliyeva, Bayram Guliyev and Sohrab Mustafayev spoke at the event.
At the event, the historical process, importance, and consequences of the events of January 20 for Azerbaijan and our people were discussed in detail. The speakers emphasized that even though the events of January 20, which had an exceptional role in our nation's gaining independence, have been involved in studies in different directions, new results can be obtained by studying the initial sources of these processes more deeply. At the same time, instead of displaying a sad attitude towards the tragic events in our history, they stressed the importance of analyzing these events correctly and taking lessons from them so that such events do not happen again.
A video about the events of January 20 was also shown at the event, which was held with the participation of faculty members and students. In addition, lecturers who witnessed the events shared their memories.
