Professor Jamal Vali Mustafayev, a prominent philosopher of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Sciences in Philosophy, Honored scientist, Director of the Centre for Translation Studies of Khazar University, a member of editorial staff of “Khazar Review” journal, passed away on December 2, 2017, at the age of 89. Jamal Mustafayev was born in Garayazi region (currently Gardabani) of Georgia in 1928. He got his secondary education in 1935-1944 at Kosali village secondary school. Afterwards, he studied two-year Institute of Teachers in Tbilisi. Jamal Mustafayev worked as a teacher in Kosali village in 1946-1948. He entered the Department of philosophy, Azerbaijan State University (currently Baku State University) in 1948. In 1949, he transferred to Moscow State University and graduated in 1952. He worked as a school principal in Garayazi region for two years.
He was a postgraduate student in Institute of Philosophy of Academy of Sciences of USSR in 1954-1957. During postgraduate education, his scientific studies concentrated on “Nizami’s philosophical and ethical views”. He defended a dissertation on this subject. Jamal Mustafayev worked as a junior scientist and senior scientist in Institute Philosophy and Law, Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in 1957-1968.
Jamal Mustafayev defended a doctoral dissertation on “Nizami’s ideas and modernity” in council of defense of the Azerbaijan State University, 1968, and was granted a degree of doctor of philosophy. He was Head of Department of Philosophy in Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (currently Azerbaijan University of Languages).
Jamal Mustafayev was a professor of Azerbaijan State University from 1976 to 1999. He was Head of Department of Ethics-aesthetics in 1985-1991 in the same university. Jamal Mustafayev had been Director of Centre for Translation Studies of Khazar University since 1999.
Jamal Mustafayev published serious scientific works on philosophical ideas of middle ages of Azerbaijan. His works dedicated to Nizami’s philosophy and philosophical ideas of XII century of Azerbaijan were quite prominent. Moreover, his articles were published in prestigious journals in Moscow and other cities. His studies on social utopia of Muslim east and other works were translated into foreign languages. Also, he was one of the researchers of modern Azerbaijan poetry.
Jamal Mustafayev’s scientific and pedagogical activity involved more than 70 scientific articles, and two monographs. He delivered reports in various national and international congresses, symposia and conferences.
Several PhDs and Doctors of sciences in ethics and aesthetics developed under the auspices of Jamal Mustafayev. He was a member of council of defense of Institute
of Philosophy of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, and a member of Scientific-administrative council of Khazar University.
The memory of outstanding scientist, sincere and caring person Jamal Mustafayev will always live in the hearts of those who know him.
