On June 25, 2026, a seminar titled "The Effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence in Learning and Teaching Mathematics" was held by PhD candidate Zibakhanim Alibalayeva, organized by the Graduate School of Science, Art and Technology and the Department of Mathematics at Khazar University.
The presenter is pursuing doctoral studies in mathematics education at the University of Victoria in Canada under a tripartite agreement between the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Khazar University, within the framework of the "State Program on Increasing the International Competitiveness of the Higher Education System in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019-2023."
Within the framework of this seminar, existing scientific literature on the use of artificial intelligence in mathematics education was summarized, and the opportunities created by AI tools for students and teachers, as well as their advantages and limitations, were presented. The presentation also examined ethical approaches to the use of AI in higher education institutions. In addition, participants were informed of the results of a study, co-authored by the presenter, comparing the performance of the ChatGPT-4o, ThetaWise, and Mathos AI chatbots in solving mathematical tasks. The research results showed that none of the chatbots examined demonstrated fully reliable performance, particularly on image-based mathematics questions. The most frequently encountered problems were related to the incorrect reading of questions and images. In conclusion, the presentation noted that while AI tools serve as a useful support tool in mathematics education, it is essential that the answers they provide be critically evaluated by teachers and students.
