Dr. Firuz Suleymanov, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science and Philosophy at Khazar University, has published an article titled “The Geopolitical Role of Water in the Former Armenia–Azerbaijan Conflict over Karabakh” in the journal Geopolítica(s) (Vol. 17, No. 1, 2026).
The article analyzes how the unequal distribution of water resources in the South Caucasus, climate change, and armed conflicts have further exacerbated water-related challenges in the region. The author argues that water resources, particularly strategic infrastructure such as the Sarsang Reservoir, played a significant role during the former Armenia–Azerbaijan conflict in terms of territorial control, security, and political influence. According to the findings of the study, water was not merely a secondary factor in the conflict; rather, it was one of the key elements of territorial competition and geopolitical confrontation.
It should be noted that Geopolítica(s) is an international academic journal published by the Complutense University of Madrid and indexed in the Scopus scientometric database.
