Khazar University's Graduate School of Science, Art and Technology and the Department of Petroleum Engineering hosted a seminar by doctoral student Nijat Gasimli on May 7, 2026, on the topic of "Fundamentals of Surfactant Injection."
Gasimli is pursuing doctoral studies in "Energy and Mineral Engineering" at Pennsylvania State University in the United States under a trilateral agreement with the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Khazar University, within the framework of the "State Program on Increasing the International Competitiveness of the Higher Education System in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019–2023."
The seminar presented the physical mechanisms of enhanced oil recovery using surfactants, considered one of the most promising chemical methods in the field of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). The primary objective of the seminar was to explain to students, in a clear, accessible, and practical manner, the complex scientific principles underlying the process of extracting residual oil trapped in reservoirs.
During the presentation, the principles of surfactant formulation were elaborated in detail, along with the dependence of their optimal chemical composition on factors such as salinity, temperature, and reservoir characteristics. Information was also provided on how engineers test and evaluate candidate reagents under laboratory conditions prior to field application.
The seminar gave students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the development process that surfactant-based enhanced oil recovery projects undergo from the laboratory stage through to field application, as well as the key technical and economic factors that determine the success or failure of such projects.
