On May 2, 2026, a seminar titled "Let's Talk About Internal Audit" was held for final-year students of the Faculty of Economics and Management by members of the Board of Directors of "IIA Azerbaijan," organized by the Career and Alumni Center of Khazar University.
At the opening, Zarifa Aliyeva, Director of the Career and Alumni Center of Khazar, provided info about the center's core mission, objectives, and areas of activity, stating that supporting students' professional development and ensuring their successful integration into the labor market are among the center's priorities. She also informed participants about the career services, internship programs, and training and development projects being implemented.
At the seminar, members of the Board of Directors of "IIA Azerbaijan" — Nargiz Aliyeva, Director of the Internal Audit Department at UniBank and a Khazar University alumna; Zaminа Abbasova, Director of the Internal Audit Department at ABC Telecom LLC; and Turkan Karimova, Senior Auditor at Azerbaijan Railways CJSC and a Khazar University alumna — delivered comprehensive presentations to students on the role and significance of the internal audit function within organizations.
Speakers noted that internal audit is not merely a control mechanism, but also an independent, objective, and integral part of strategic management that contributes to an organization's corporate governance, risk management, and the strengthening of its control systems. An overview was also provided of the value created by internal audit, contemporary approaches, and the Global Internal Audit Standards issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors, and existing myths and realities surrounding the field were discussed.
During the meeting, students were also informed of the core competencies required for the internal audit profession, the differences between this field and external audit, and available career opportunities. Participants learned that audit activity is not limited to financial inspections alone, and that analytical thinking, communication skills, and a risk-oriented approach are key elements of success in the field. In this context, the application of internal audit across various sectors and its multifaceted role within organizations were explained to students through practical examples.
The significance of May as Internal Audit Awareness Month was also highlighted, and students were introduced to the official website of the Institute of Internal Auditors. They were informed about the resources and learning opportunities available, and in particular, the free membership options designed for students. Activities and initiatives undertaken by "IIA Azerbaijan," as well as steps aimed at advancing the profession in the country, were also shared with participants.
The event provided students with a valuable opportunity to enrich both their theoretical and practical knowledge.
The speakers who participated in the meeting were extended gratitude. Their sharing of knowledge and experience with students, their contribution to a closer acquaintance with the internal audit profession, and their role in supporting the professional development of young people are of particular importance. Such initiatives provide significant support to the formation of future specialists and the continued advancement of the profession.
