A jubilee event was held at Khazar on May 1, 2026, to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Aliyar Muhammad oglu Garabagly — a distinguished educator, literary scholar, and author several works on literature teaching methodology. The event named "A Teacher's Life" was dedicated to honoring the eminent pedagogue's scientific and pedagogical legacy, his contributions to the Azerbaijani education, and the noble value of the teaching profession.
The event was attended by representatives of the country's leading higher education and scientific institutions, including scholars and specialists from BSU, ASPU, Azerbaijan University, the Folklore Institute of ANAS, and the Azerbaijan National Archive Administration, and members of the jubilarian's family and close relatives.
The host of the anniversary event, PhD Aygul Gurbanova, a lecturer at the Department of Languages and Literatures, emphasized the exceptional role Prof. Aliyar Garabagly played in shaping the methodology of Azerbaijani literature teaching, noting that the significance of his personality and scholarly legacy becomes ever more apparent with the passage of time. A video documentary reflecting the scholar's life and work was screened as part of the event.
The keynote speaker at the jubilee event, Prof. Acad. Hamlet Isakhanli, founder of Khazar University and Chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees, shared personal memories of Aliyar Garabagly, highlighting his exceptional methodological mastery as a teacher and, in particular, his role in the development of native language textbooks. Isakhanli noted that the works of Teacher Aliyar served as a foundational instructional resource for several generations. Also addressing the event were Asif Hajiyev (Professor at Azerbaijan University), Bilal Hasanli (Assoc. Prof. at the Department of Literature Teaching Technology, ASPU), Rahila Guliyeva (Assoc. Prof. at the Department of Methodology of Teaching Azerbaijani Language and Literature, BSU), Khuraman Karimova (Leading Research Fellow and Assoc. Prof. at the Folklore Institute of ANAS), and Khatira Gadirova (staff member of ANAA), each addressing various aspects of Prof. Aliyar Garabagly's scientific and pedagogical activity.
It was noted that the scholar's textbook "Mother Tongue," published in 1946, was used as the primary instructional resource in schools for many years, and that his works on the methodology of literature teaching retain their relevance to this day. Speakers placed particular emphasis on Professor Aliyar Garabagly's contributions to the teaching and study of Azerbaijani folklore, noting that his research in this field made a significant contribution to the development of national literary studies and folkloristics. Professor Aliyar Garabagly lives on in memory not only as a scholar but also as a teacher of exceptional moral qualities. Although his students have pursued careers across various fields, they continue to uphold the values instilled in them by their teacher. Farganeh Alesgarli, a staff member of the Department of Languages and Literatures, recited the poem "A Teacher's Life" by Musa Yagub.
Performed with the accompaniment of the Chamber Orchestra of the Department of Music and Fine Arts at Khazar University, the "Chahargah Composition," Sardar Farajov's "Karabakhname," as well as classical and folk music pieces and literary compositions, were met with warm applause from the event's participants and guests. It was emphasized that the rich legacy of Professor Aliyar Garabagly constitutes an important moral and scientific source for future generations, and that anniversaries of this kind carry special significance for the preservation of national memory.
