On January 20, 2026, the Head of the Department of History and Archaeology, Associate Professor Telman Nusratoglu, was a guest on live broadcasts of several programs on Turkish and Azerbaijani television channels on the occasion of the anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.
Doctor of Historical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Telman Nusratoglu appeared on various analytical and socio-political programs on TRT Haber, TRT Avaz, AZTV, REAL TV, and ARB24 channels, extensively analyzing the national independence struggle waged by the Azerbaijani people in the early 1990s, as well as the political, historical, and geopolitical causes of the January 20 massacre perpetrated by the Soviet empire against the peaceful population that had risen with demands for freedom.
During the live broadcasts, he emphasized that the violence applied against the Azerbaijani people, who took to the squares in Baku and other regions to resist the aggression of Armenian armed groups and threats directed at territorial integrity, was an integral part of imperial policy. Associate Professor Nusratoglu noted that the events of January 20 did not break the Azerbaijani people's will for freedom, but on the contrary, strengthened national unity and constituted a decisive stage on the path to independence.
The importance of preserving the tragedy in historical memory, conveying it correctly to the international community, and transmitting it objectively to future generations was also specifically emphasized in the appearances.
