Sabzali Javadov, who was the head of the Khazar University Biochemistry Department in 1993-2003, and a professor at the United States of America University of Puerto Rico, passed away from a sudden heart attack on June 4, 2024, at the age of 64.
Sabzali Javadov was born on May 20, 1960, in Khachmaz district, Azerbaijan, into an intellectual family. He completed his secondary education in Baku and earned his higher education in biochemistry at the Pirogov Second Moscow Medical Institute. He obtained his candidate of medical sciences degree in biochemistry and cardiology from the Institute of Experimental Cardiology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences' All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center.
In 1992, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the joint scientific council of the Russian Cardiology Scientific-Industrial Complex and the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.
Throughout his career, Sabzali Javadov, who worked in both Azerbaijan and Western countries, effectively represented Azerbaijani science. From 2003 to 2008, he moved to Canada at the invitation of the University of Western Ontario's Faculty of Medicine (now Western University) to continue his scientific research. From 2009 the last day of his life, he was a professor at the University of Puerto Rico's Faculty of Medicine and the director of the Scientific Laboratory for the Study of Heart Mitochondria.
Sabzali Javadov was an internationally recognized scientist with expertise in cardiac biochemistry and physiology. He was recognized among the world's top 2% most cited scientists in 2022 and 2023, according to a ranking by Stanford University. He authored over 140 scientific articles, books, and book chapters, held 3 patents, and presented at more than 120 scientific conferences. His work was published in high-impact journals, and he was a member of numerous prestigious scientific societies and committees.
Sabzali Javadov maintained ties with Khazar University and conducted his last scientific seminar there on October 6, 2022, on " Ferroptosis as a new mechanism of cell death: the role of mitochondria." The cherished memory of Professor Sabzali Javadov, a renowned scientist and a caring, sincere person, will forever remain in the hearts of his students, friends, and all who knew him.
