In September 2017, Khazar University was accredited by the UN Convention against Desertification.
The main purpose of this convention is to prevent the destruction of desertification and vegetation on the Earth, affected by the human activities and climate change. The Convention is put into effect through the obligations the ratified countries have taken on. It should be noted that Azerbaijan also joined the convention which means Azerbaijan, as an independent state, fights against desertification across the country through international and national initiatives.
Accreditation of Khazar University came as no surprise as the Center for Environmental Research, established at Khazar University in 2007, has focused on the desertification problem as one of the main issues in its ongoing scientific researches. Numerous documents were required during the accreditation and the Center's scientific activities were being thoroughly examined. At the COP13 Conference (Conference of Parties) held in September this year in Ordos, China, the accreditation of the Khazar University has been approved. It's interesting that, the only organization, IDEA chaired by Leyla Aliyeva from Azerbaijan was accredited. Four organizations from Georgia and two from Azerbaijan have been accredited out of former Soviet republics. No organization has been accredited from other republics.
Khazar University will participate in all UN future conventions as an observer organization. Throughout its scientific activity, Khazar University will put forward all topics in the light of prevention of desertification closely with UN structures, enabling it to further expand its international relations in this field.
