Azerbaijani literary scholarship has suffered a profound loss. Distinguished scholar Dr. Nazakat Mammadli, who honorably represented our academic community in numerous countries worldwide, passed away on February 3, 2025, at the age of 53. As the Director of the Mevlana Literary-Philosophical Research Center at Khazar University since 2022, she conducted extensive research on the literary heritage of prominent Azerbaijani authors including Fuzuli, Hamza Nigari Qarabagi, Seyid Yahya Shirvani, Sevdayi, and published significant works on Faridaddin Attar and Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi.
Dr. Mammadli was born in 1971 in the Sabirabad region. She graduated with distinction diploma from the Faculty of Philology at Baku State University (1989-94) and pursued her postgraduate studies at the Institute of Literature named after Nizami of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) from 1994 to 1997. She earned her Ph.D. in 1997 with her dissertation "Sufism and its Artistic Expression System in Fuzuli's 'Leyli and Majnun.'" In 2023, she defended her doctoral dissertation on "Faridaddin Attar and Azerbaijani Literature." Her scholarly contributions include 145 academic publications in domestic and international journals, 5 monographs, and 9 books that she translated and transliterated.
Dr. Mammadli served as a senior research fellow at the ANAS Institute of Literature named after Nizami from 1994 to 2010 and subsequently worked at the ANAS Institute of Manuscripts named after Fuzuli until her untimely passing.
The memory of Dr. Nazakat Mammadli, an eminent scholar and compassionate individual, will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
