On January 27-28, 2025, the Department of English Language and Literature organized a seminar on "Pre-service Teacher Training." The seminar, presented by Michael Collins, was designed for students studying English Language Teaching at Khazar University.
The first day of the seminar addressed classroom management, teacher persona development during lessons, and successful organization of classroom discussions. The second day focused on proper lesson planning, practical vocabulary teaching, and ensuring educational continuity.
On January 30, 2025, the Department of English Language and Literature organized a workshop on "Advanced Teacher Training Sessions" presented by the department's lecturer Eynur Mehdiyev. The workshop explored English language teaching methods, communicative language instruction, and the practical application of second language acquisition theories.
At the conclusion of the training, survey sheets distributed to teachers reflected positive feedback about the workshop.

Dr. Muhammad Imran of Khazar University's English Language and Literature Department published an article titled “Fine-Tuning QurSim on Monolingual and Multilingual Models for Semantic Search” in Information, 16 (84), a Scopus Q2 and Web of Science-ESCI Indexed journal.
This research introduces a multilingual QurSim dataset using authentic translations and shows that monolingual models outperform multilingual ones for Arabic verse classification and retrieval tasks.

On January 21-22, 2025, the Department of English Language and Literature organized a seminar on "Teacher Professional Development" presented by Michael Collins. The first day of the seminar addressed crucial topics such as classroom management, differentiation, and establishing classroom dialogue. The following day focused on important issues including providing proper feedback, practical application of vocabulary teaching, and supplementary teaching materials.
Teachers exchanged views on challenges they face in teaching English. The seminar, which was attended by nearly 30 teachers, was met with particular interest.
Teachers who participated in both days of the training received certificates endorsed by the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan.
The screening of the film "Emilia" took place on January 13, 2025, at the "Cine Club" hall of Landmark Business Center. The film is a drama depicting the struggle for freedom in Lithuania during Soviet repressions. The protagonist Emilia marches with protesting crowds toward her desired life in spring 1972, as young people flood the streets of Kaunas demanding freedom for Lithuania.
The film was translated into Azerbaijani by fourth-year translation students Khaver Kekalova, Gulchin Ibrahimova, Ali Garazade, and Aysel Ahmadova, along with second-year English language teaching student Adila Abbasova from Khazar University's Department of English Language and Literature, under the guidance of department instructor Elmira Jahangirli.
Before the screening, Lithuanian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Kestutis Vaskelevičius expressed his profound gratitude to Milana Abbasova, Head of the Department of English Language and Literature at the University, for her support. Following this, an award ceremony was held for the Khazar University students who contributed to the film's translation and subtitling into Azerbaijani.

On December 24, 2024, the fourth poetry recitation competition titled "Poetic Voices" was held in the Marble Hall of Khazar University, organized by the Department of English Language and Literature. Nearly 20 students performed selected poems from English classical literature.
The event began with an opening speech by Milana Abbasova, head of the English Language and Literature Department, followed by Michael Collins, an American specialist and department teacher, who read his poems dedicated to Khazar University and its students. Prof. Acad. Hamlet Isakhanli, founder of Khazar University and Chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees, noted the importance of the competition in his speech and wished success to the participants.
The jury consisted of senior lecturer Firangiz Nasirova, Naila Gasimova (Khazar University, Department of English Language and Literature), Michael Collins, and Leyli Salayeva (member of Azerbaijan Writers Union and British Poetry Society, poet, writer, and literary translator).
The jury evaluated the participants based on predetermined criteria. Students from the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences majoring in English Language Teaching won the competition:
1st place: Ravan Shahmarly - fourth-year student;
2nd place: Khadija Ahmadzada - third-year student; Narmin Mulkumova - fourth-year student;
3rd place: Sakina Aghayeva - third-year student; Fidan Novruzova - third-year student of Philology (English Language and Literature); Adila Abbasova - second-year student.
Winners were presented with certificates and plaques.
Samantha Curle has been appointed as Adjunct Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature. She is also a researcher in Applied Linguistics at the University of Bath.
Samantha Curle holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Oxford, where she also completed two master's degrees. Her research focuses on bilingual education and the psychology of language learning. She has published numerous articles and has received several awards, including the "University of Bath's Doctoral Recognition Award" (2023/24) and the "Recognising Excellence Award" (2021/22). She is a member of both the Higher Education Academy and the Royal Society of Arts.

Aynur Rzayeva, a Ph.D. candidate and instructor in the Department of English Language and Literature, represented Khazar University in the V4 seminar "Youth for Democracy," organized in the framework of the Polish Presidency in the Visegrad Group. The seminar happened on 21-24 October in Warsaw, Poland. The program financed by Erasmus+ and organized by SALTO Eastern Europe and Caucasus (SALTO Resource Centre) with the Co-organizer FRSE - Foundation for the Development of the Education System, Poland (National Agency) aimed to advance youth participation, democratic engagement, and international youth cooperation.
Note that, the event brought together enthusiastic young leaders from Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Eastern Partnership countries. The event included workshops, panel discussions, networking sessions with opinion leaders from the Visegrad Group and Eastern Partnership region, and cultural activities.
On October 5, 2024, Dr. Elvin Abbasbeyli, a translation instructor at Khazar University's Department of English Language and Literature and coordinator of the "Translation Center," presented at the international scientific conference "AZLING 2024 - Azerbaijani Language and Modern Linguistics: Problems, Prospects, and Challenges" held in Neftchala city.
Dr. Abbasbeyli delivered a report on "The Past, Present, and Future of Interpretation: Current Situation in Azerbaijan" and answered questions from the participants.
During the conference, a collection of articles from the 2023 conference was presented. This collection includes Dr. Abbasbeyli's article titled "The Current State of Azerbaijani Literature Translation into French and Emerging Translation Issues."
On September 25, 2024, on the occasion of the European Day of Languages, Dr. Elvin Abbasbeyli, translation instructor at Khazar University's Department of English Language and Literature and coordinator of the university's Center of Translation and Interpretation, gave an interview to the "Good Morning, Azerbaijan!" program on “Ictimai” Television (ITV). During the interview, he answered the hosts' numerous questions about the professions of translator and interpreter, whether artificial intelligence poses a threat to the future of the translation profession, and other questions about foreign languages.

The defense commission was chaired by Prof. Azad Mammadov, Doctor of Philological Sciences and Head of the Department of General Linguistics at Azerbaijan University of Languages. The commission members included Milana Abbasova, Head of the Department of English Language and Literature at Khazar University; Assoc. Prof. Irina Orujova, lecturer at Azerbaijan University of Languages; Prof. Huseynaga Rzayev, lecturer at Khazar University; and Dr. Imran Mahammad, lecturer at Prince Sultan University in Saudi Arabia.
Following the presentations and discussions, the dissertations were evaluated positively.
On June 14, 2024, a seminar entitled " and Academic Writing: Challenges in Humanities Research Production and Publication " was organized by the Department of English Language and Literature of Khazar University and presented by Muhammad Imran, a researcher in the Education Research Lab, College of Humanities and Sciences at Prince Sultan University, Saudia Arabia. The seminar consisted of two parts. The first part focused on artificial intelligence and its use in the educational process. In the second part, an interactive session was held on how artificial intelligence can help researchers in the research process. At the end of the seminar, the lecturers of the department and Muhammed Imran discussed the topics covered.
On May 30-31, 2024, Dr. Elvin Abbasbeyli, an oral translation instructor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Khazar University and coordinator of the University’s Center for Translation and Interpretation, attended the international scientific conference “Modern Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages, Problems of Linguistics, Literary Studies, and Translation Studies” at Mamun University in Khiva, Uzbekistan. He delivered a speech on "Conference Interpreting and Diplomatic Interpretation Activities in International Organizations". Researchers from Uzbekistan, Russia, and the United States also presented their findings at the event. The following day, Bahrom Yuldashev, vice-rector for international relations at Mamun University, met with Elvin Abbasbeyli. During their meeting, they discussed the project of regularly organizing master classes in oral translation for selected English language faculty members at Mamun University starting next academic year, and expressed a desire to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Khazar University.
On May 22, 2024 the Department of English Language and Literature held a commemorative matinee event at Khazar University Fikrat Amirov Conference-Concert Center. The event was dedicated to the 460th birthday anniversary of William Shakespeare.
The head of the Department of English Language and Literature Dr. Milana Abbasova delivered a welcome speech to greet the attendance. Senior teacher Firangiz Nasirova’s emotive speech was interspersed with popular quotes from Shakespeare elicited from the student audience.
Khazar University alumnus Kamran Nasirov then shared his experience of being introduced to Shakespeare’s plays and delivered a very artistic interpretation of the world-famous monolog from Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet.”
The participant Khazar University students and students from Azerbaijan University of Languages presented a series of sonnets, a monolog fragment from Othello, and R. L. Stevenson’s poem inspired by a Shakespeare’s play. A student choir conducted by F. Nasirova sang an ever popular song from a 1968 screen version of “Romeo and Juliet” and picked up by the audience.
A true highlight of the event was a stage performance of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Macbeth” by the student actors of the Khazar University Art Club led by the second year students Shayeste Malekan and Ramala Hasanova. Their creative and inspired performance left nobody in the audience untouched.
At the end of the event, Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli addressed the audience and the student actors and performers to commend the actors on their animated and talented performance and expressed a hope that their artistic spirit should find new venues and larger audiences.
Senior instructor of Azerbaijan University of Languages Tarana Hasanova shared her impressions of the program and students’ performances and stressed the value of cooperation between the universities.
When the event presenter English Language and Literature Department coordinator Tamella Mammadli closed the event, the spirit of the shared experience lingered with the audience and left everyone with a shared felling of an experience that is festive, meaningful, and fulfilling.
On May 15, 2024, the final of the “2nd National Consecutive Interpretation Contest” organized by the Department of English Language and Literature was held at Khazar University's Marble Hall. 8 finalists majoring in translation from 4 universities of the country took part in the contest. Note that the finalists were determined on the basis of a three-stage selection.
The event started with the welcome notes by Prof. Acad. Hamlet Isakhanli, founder of Khazar University and chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees and Assoc. Prof Irada Khalilova, the rector of Khazar University. Then the participants translated live speeches into English, Azerbaijani and Russian. The guest speakers were Vahid Asgari, Gulafat Shafiyeva and Grigorii Penkov. Vahid Asgari, (LING, BC, Int'l Business Affairs Consultant & ESL/EFL Instructor) delivered a speech on “Consecutive Interpretation: Importance and skills”. The second speaker Gulafat Shafiyeva (Lecturer, Khazar University) and third speaker Grigorii Penkov (Lecturer, Khazar University) dedicated their speeches to COP 29. It should be mentioned that “The 2024 Baku Climate Change Conference”, or COP 29, is an international conference organized by the United Nations that scheduled to take place from November 11 to 22, 2024 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

2nd place: Zahra Ahadova, a second-year master student majoring in Translation (English) at Azerbaijan University of Languages.

On May 9-11, 2024, the 4th International Conference on the Philosophy of Language, Literature, and Linguistics, ICPL2024 (ICPL 2024), was held in a hybrid format under the joint organization of Khazar University's English Language and Literature Department and Manisa Celal Bayar University's English Language and Literature Department. The articles included in the conference were sent by researchers from Azerbaijan, Australia, Bulgaria, France, Georgia, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, India, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Malaysia, Netherlands, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Türkiye, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, and Uzbekistan.
The opening ceremony of the conference began with the welcome speeches of Prof. Kurt Ay, vice-rector of Manisa Celal Bayar University; Prof. Maryam Ayan, head of the Department of English Language and Literature of MCBU; and Dr. Milana Abbasova, head of the Department of English Language and Literature of Khazar University. Then, national music performed by Manisa Celal Bayar University's music band was presented.
Later, the keynote speakers – Dr. Alan Libert (the adjunct professor of Khazar University/professor at Newcastle University, Australia), Dr. Davud Kuhi (the adjunct professor of Khazar University/professor of Islamic Azad University, Iran), and Prof. Toril Moi (professor of Duke University, England) – delivered their keynote speeches.
After the opening ceremony, researchers from different universities spoke in two sessions with five panels each.
The first day of the conference was devoted to in-person participants, whereas on the second day, online presenters joined and presented their papers. On the last day of the conference, the participants went on a sightseeing tour, immersing themselves in new cultures and experiencing international relations.

On April 3, 2024, Dr. Milana Abbasova the head of the English Language and Literature department delivered a speech on “Selecting a right research topic” as a guest lecturer at the Three Day International Virtual Workshop on "Research article writing and publication in scholarly journals" jointly organized by Department of English and Foreign Languages SRM Institute of Science and Technology and Lavender Literary Club, India.
According to the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission under the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated March 18, 2024, the doctoral student of the Department of English Language and Literature of Khazar University Amina Anvar Safarzade was conferred the title of Doctor of Philosophy in Philology for her dissertation titled "Correlation of Word Order and Sentence Accent in Modern English," specializing in 5708.01 – German languages. On April 5, 2024, the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan awarded him with a Doctor of Philosophy diploma.

During the conference, researchers from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the United States presented made reports on their respective research areas.
The day before the conference, Mamun University Rector Arslonbek Nurjonov and Vice-Rector of International Relations Bahrom Yuldashev met with Elvin Abbasbeyli, coordinator of the "Translation and Interpreting Center," to discuss the potential organization of future master classes for students from Mamun University's Translation Faculty in the field of oral translation.
On January 9, 2024, Dr. Milana Abbasova the head of the English Language and Literature department delivered her lecture as a resource person at the Five-Day Faculty Development Programme “Futuristic Trends of Language Learning: Impact of Artificial Intelligence on 21st Century Learners”. The event was organized by Madanapalle Institute of Technology and Science New Delhi, India.
On January 9-10, 2024, Dr. Milana Abbasova the head of the English Language and Literature department delivered her lecture as a guest speaker at International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research & Innovation in Academia and Industry, organized by Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai, India.
On June 30, 2020, the topics of theses of PhD students and candidates for a degree of the Department of English Language and Literature was discussed via “Zoom” platform.
Gozel Mammadova's “The study of the journey from journalism to literary realism based on the works of James Joyce”; and Aygun Huseynova's “Stable and changing values in J.Chang's Wild Swans (in the example of women and society)” works were presented.
After the presentations by the PhD students, the discussions were held by the participants. The discussions were joined by Dr. Bahman Amani, Head of the Department, Saida Sharifova, Coordinator of the Division of Graduate Studies and Research, Milana Abbasova, Research Coordinator of the Department, PhD, Prof. Rahila Geybullayeva and PhD, Prof. Nigar Isgandarova. It was recommended to bring the topics to the Academic Council of the University.
On June 29, 2020, Khazar University's English Language and Literature Department held an online defense of dissertations for master’s students majoring in linguistics via Microsoft Teams platform. Following students presented their dissertations: Roya Kerimli on “A Comparative Study of Second Language Teaching Techniques at Public, Private and International Schools in Azerbaijan”; Jamila Mammadova on “Types and Functions of Code Switching Used by Foundation Students at Khazar University”.
The members of the Defense Council included Dr. Bahman Amani, Head of the Department, Saida Sharifova, Coordinator of the Division of Graduate Studies and Research, Milana Abbasova, Research Coordinator of the Department, department’s faculty - Irina Orujova, Ilham Tagiyev and Nailya Gasimova. After discussions on the topics, the works were evaluated and in the end it was decided to award the applicants with master's degree.
