On October 21, 2022, an opening ceremony was held in visual and online format on the occasion of the launch of the Chinese Studies Center at Khazar University.
Rector of Khazar University Irada Khalilova, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to China Akram Zeynalli, Ambassador of China to Azerbaijan Ms. Guo Min and others participated in the event.
Emphasizing that this year is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the speakers pointed out that relations are developing successfully in various fields.
It was noted that China's "Belt and Road" initiative, supported by Azerbaijan, has created new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, including in the fields of science, education, and culture.
Considering that the intensive development of relations between the two countries in modern times has revealed the need for our peoples to get to know each other more closely, a decision was made to establish the Center for China Studies at Khazar University.
Director of the Belt and Road Academy of Beijing Language and Culture University, Xu Baofeng, official of the World Council of Sinologists, and head of the Azerbaijani language department of Beijing Foreign Languages University, invited scholar of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Ph.D. in philology, Agshin Aliyev gave information about the Chinese Studies Center at Khazar University.
It was noted that the research center, which will perform the function of the first and only think tank specializing in China in Azerbaijan, will conduct in-depth research on the historical relations between the two countries based on Chinese and Azerbaijani sources, on Chinese culture, economy, Azerbaijan-China relations, humanitarian, cultural, educational and will act in the direction of supporting the dynamic development of scientific relations. In addition, the center will deal with the optimization and improvement of Chinese language teaching in Azerbaijan and the study of teaching methods, the involvement of Azerbaijani Chinese scholars in the scientific activities of the center, and the provision of cooperation with relevant Chinese research and think tanks.
Chinese Research Center at Khazar University will cooperate with well-known Chinese scholars and research centers specializing in China, as well as think tanks, will try to organize mutual contacts between educators and scientists of the two countries, and will carry out relevant educational events among students regarding education in China. It is planned to create a scientific database on China under the center.
It was noted that the center will support the preparation of research and informative articles on Azerbaijan-China relations, and will help establish contacts between non-state institutions (museums, libraries, etc.) between the two countries. In order to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of the center's activities, the creation of a scientific council consisting of local and foreign (from China and other relevant countries) sinologists, the publication of the "Azerbaijan International Chinese Studies" scientific journal, the organization of annual scientific conferences and seminars, and the implementation of regular mutual artistic and scientific translation works, as well as offering translation services, compiling and researching multifunctional dictionaries, and writing Chinese language textbooks are planned.
The main partner in the establishment and operation of the Chinese Research Center at Khazar University is China's World Sinology Center. In addition, cooperation with other relevant institutions of China is planned and relevant initial contacts have already been established.
