Khazar Air Quality Laboratory Launched

On June 1, 2019, Khazar Air Quality Laboratory (Khazar Air Quality Lab) was launched at Khazar University. The Laboratory is equipped with modern portable equipment that allows to define air quality parameters. With the help of these equipment, it will be possible to determine the following air quality parameters:

1. Surface ozone. Surface ozone is produced when two primary pollutants react in sunlight and stagnant air. These two primary pollutants are nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

2. Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is found in cigarette smoke and also can be formed in the environment during the burning of fuels or household waste.

3. PM 2.5 and PM10 Particulate matter. PM 2.5 and 10 microns of Particulate matter are formed during the burning of fuels and other waste in urban environments. 2.5 and PM10 Particulate matter examples include dust, ash and sea-spray.

4. Sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide is formed in urban environment as a result of burning of fuels and other particles.

These above-mentioned parameters allow to calculate the Copernicus air quality index. It should be noted that the laboratory will regularly measure these parameters in the urban environment and inform the population on the pollution levels.
