This course introduces the scope and nature of the chemical and petroleum industries, the role of professional engineers within these industries, and key technical concepts underpinning chemical and petroleum engineering.
CHE252: Material and Energy Balance
Prerequisite: CHE201:
The course will cover concepts ranging from basics such as units and dimensions, stoichiometry to the simultaneous application of material and energy balances with and without occurrence of chemical reaction.
ENGR205: Engineering Mechanics
Prerequisite: PHSC112
Topics to be covered include equivalent systems of forces, resultants and distributed forces, equilibrium of rigid bodies, centroids, centers of gravity, moments of inertia, shear and moment diagrams and friction. Analysis of frames and machines, forces in beams, internal stresses and stability will also be considered. Vector algebra will be used throughout
ENGR303: Thermodynamics I
Prerequisite: CHE252
The objective of this course is to provide the students with an understanding the primitive principals and terminology relevant to first law of thermodynamics and their application to engineering systems. Analyses of various states and equations governing on a system, e.g. ideal gas, real gas (virial equation) and evaluation of energy conservation in some devices such as nozzles, turbines, pumps and turbines are two principal objectives.
ENGR354: Thermodynamics II
Prerequisite: ENGR303
The objective of this course is to provide the students with an understanding the primitive principals and terminology relevant to the second law of thermodynamics and their application to engineering systems. Applying thermodynamics to multicomponent-multiphase equilibrium system is another objective. It is aimed to learn and evaluate mixing rules and mixture properties in non-ideal systems
ENGR210: Fluid Mechanics +Lab
Prerequisite: MATH 310, ENGR303
This is an introductory course in fluid mechanics. The topics covered include fluid properties, fluid statics, conservation laws, dimensional analysis and similitude, inviscid and viscous incompressible flow, and flow in confined streams and around objects.
CHE 331: Heat Transfer + Lab
Prerequisite: MATH 310, ENGR303
This course covers general principals of heat transfer by conduction, convection, radiation heat transfer and their application in solving practical problems. Analyzing of heat transport phenomena in designing and optimizing industrial systems such as heat exchangers. Types of heat exchangers like double pipe, shell & tube, plate type, extended surface, their construction and operation, basic calculations on heat exchangers.
CHE 352: Mass Transfer
Prerequisite: MATH 310, ENGR303
Mass transfer course is required to be taught for 3’th-year undergraduate students in the Khazar university chemical engineering program. The course content focuses on the fundamentals of diffusion and mass transfer in fluid (gas and liquid) systems. Better understanding of mass transport phenomena in separation technology such Extraction and Distillation.
ENV 305: Unit Operations I:
Prerequisite: ENGR303
This course is to provide a theoretical and applied knowledge for unit operation and troubleshooting. To know the essential parameters and profiles to analyze qualitatively the operation of continuous processes. Being able to detect problems in process runs, optimize the process control and achieving an overview about the different process unit equipment
CHE 403: Unit Operations II + Lab
Prerequisite: ENV 305
In this course the students will learn the basic principles of process units’ operation, fundamentals of phase behavior, mass transfer operations and process troubleshooting that is vital for engineering activities in Oil Gas sector. Safety issues and overview about project development will be also shared with students in order to have full understanding the principal concept of Oil and Gas Industry and trends as well as perspectives.
CHE 404: Process Control +Lab
Prerequisite: MATH 310, ENV305
To provide basic concepts of chemical engineering unit operations and processes automations. General concepts and terminology of measurement systems, static and dynamic characteristics, errors, standards and calibration.
CHE 405: Kinetics and Reactions (Reactor Design)
Prerequisite: MATH 310, ENGR354
The major objective of this course is to introduce and develop an understanding of reaction rate kinetics of chemical systems/processes and apply this understanding and knowledge to the design of a typical chemical reactor.
CHE 455: Catalysis and Catalytic processes
Prerequisite: CHE 305
This course will introduce mechanisms and applications of transition‐metal catalysts. The course aims to transfer basic knowledge in following aspects: Kinetics of catalytic and enzymatic reactions. Rate equations of catalytic reactions. The steady state approximation and the rate determining step approximation. Catalytic reactors, differential reactor, kinetic models discrimination. Heterogenous catalysis. Langmuir adsorption. Kinetics of heterogeneous catalytic reactions.
Chem 460: Modeling and Simulations of Processes
Prerequisite: CHE 352
This course will extend the modeling skills introduced in this course. Extension will primarily come through consideration of chemical, biochemical and pharmaceutical processes of increasing complexity, including real-life processes. Skills will be developed in developing models for the processes using fundamental principles and solving these efficiently using numerical methods.
