The Department of History and Archeology was founded in Khazar University in June 1993 together with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The activities of the department are based on academic and scientific principles. Research and teaching activities conducted according to these principles have been accepted as the first task of the department.
Until 2007, it operated under the name of the Department of History and after this date it continued it’s work and research under the name of the Department of History and Archeology.
In 2010, History and Geography teaching was opened in the Faculty of Education and History and Archeology Department and in 2013, History teaching specialty was opened.
Between 1993 and 2019, Assoc. Roza Arazova headed the department. Between 2019 and 2021, Orkhan Zamanov conducted as a coordinator.
From September 2021, the position of department head will be head by Phd. Telman Guliyev Nusratoglu is performing.
Currently, the department, which teaches two separate specialties, namely History teaching and History and Geography teaching, also teaches the history of Azerbaijan to students from various faculties and specialties.
The department has created conditions for students of the specialty to do practice and experience at the Dunya School.
Azerbaijan Archeology journal has been published within the department since 1999, with two issues per year. This journal has the distinction of being the first archeology journal in the post Soviet space and is currently included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission.
