A Republican Scientific Conference dedicated to the 900th anniversary of the birth of the great Azerbaijani poet Khaqani Shirvani, titled "Khaqani Shirvani 900 – Predecessors and Successors: Medieval Manuscripts and Historical Problems of Azerbaijani Culture," will be held jointly organized by the Manuscripts Institute named after Muhammad Fuzuli of ANAS and the Mawlana Institute of Literary-Philosophical Research of Khazar University.
The commemoration of Khaqani Shirvani's 900th jubilee, as decreed by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on January 28, 2026, is an expression of the highest esteem accorded to the classical literary and cultural heritage. This decision creates an important scholarly foundation for the systematic study of the great poet's rich poetic-philosophical legacy and its presentation to the international academic community on a broader scale.
The primary objective of the conference is to analyze Khaqani's body of work through contemporary scholarly approaches across multiple disciplines and to reassess the place of the medieval manuscript heritage in the history of Azerbaijani culture. Within the framework of the event, Khaqani's literary legacy will be examined through the lenses of textual criticism, source studies, historiography, and literary scholarship, as well as folklore studies, Turkology, philosophy and theology, and cultural studies.
The discussions will focus particularly on the poet's artistic characteristics, the complex imagery of his poetic language, his rich symbolism and metaphorical structure, and the artistic expression of national and universal spiritual values. At the same time, the translation of his works into world languages and their geographic dissemination, Khaqani's life and activity against the backdrop of the socio-political and cultural environment of the Shirvanshah period, his standing within the broader Eastern Divan literature, as well as current issues and prospects in Azerbaijani Khaqani studies, are expected to generate extensive scholarly discussion.
The conference will also foreground such matters as the study of medieval manuscripts, the re-evaluation of classical texts from scientific-theoretical and philosophical perspectives, and the examination of Khaqani's legacy in light of contemporary pedagogical and methodological approaches.
The organizers believe that the "Khaqani-900" conference will make a significant contribution to the study of classical Azerbaijani literary-philosophical thought from a new perspective, to the enrichment of national and cultural memory on a scholarly basis, and to the identification of future research directions.
