Mirsadig Mukhtarov, staff member of Khazar University's Department of Psychology and psychologist at the Khazar Psychological Service Center, shared his views on exam stress, parents' academic expectations, and children's psychological health with the "Tehsil365" news portal on August 15, 2026.
The psychologist noted that it is incorrect to associate exam stress solely with the exam itself. According to him, family expectations, teachers' attitudes, the demands children place on themselves, and worries about the future also increase psychological pressure. When a grade is regarded as the main indicator of a child's personal worth, this can lead a student to see the exam as a means through which they must prove themselves.
Mirsadig Mukhtarov noted that when parents' expectations of high results turn into constant pressure without taking the child's abilities and emotional state into account, this can create fear of failure, anxiety, reduced self-confidence, perfectionism, and emotional exhaustion. The psychologist emphasized that constantly comparing a child and evaluating them solely based on results can lead them to measure their own worth only by their achievements. He noted that a parent's main goal should not be simply demanding high results, but should also include preserving the child's motivation to learn, self-confidence, and psychological resilience.
Mirsadig Mukhtarov noted that in a healthy academic environment, a child should learn both responsibility and that failure is a normal part of life. A child's worth is determined not only by the grades and results they achieve, but also by the effort and attempts they make.
