Assoc. Prof. Orkhan Valiyev and Burcu Temur explain the role of history in national state-building within the framework of modernist nationalism theory using the example of Karabakh. The authors examine the demographic changes caused by Russia's policy in the region and its impact on the claims of Armenian nationalism, and link the success of Azerbaijani nationalism in the Karabakh war to historical realities.
