On November 28-29, 2025, the 4th International Conference on “One Health: Problems and Solutions” was held at Khazar University.
Focusing heavily on “Local and Regional Systems Transformation for Planetary Health Systems Change”, the event is dedicated to the 10th Anniversary of the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), of which Khazar University is an active member.
This conference was organized in collaboration with Azerbaijan Medical University, Azerbaijan National Research Institute of Medical Prevention named after Vali Akhundov, the Food Safety Agency of The Republic of Azerbaijan, the Department of Molecular Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) (as a part of the project LEARNSAVE, supported by the Swedish Institute SI, Baltic Sea Neighbourhood Programme, number 01236/2023), and Caucasus University Association.
The rector of Khazar University, Dr. Razia Isayeva, Head of the TABIB Medical Services Development Department of Azerbaijan, PhD, Dr. Yagut Garayeva, President of the Caucasus University Association, Prof. Ramazan Korkmaz, and Chair of the Conference, Assoc. Prof. Irada Khalilova opened the conference with a welcome speech. Afterwards, the participants were presented with a welcome video from the PHA.
On the first day of the conference, the Climate Change, Health, and Food Security session was moderated by the chair, Assoc. Prof. Irada Khalilova, Prof. Seyyed Abolghasem Mohammedi, Assoc. Prof. Javid Ojaghi. The key speakers, Dr Rovshan Abbasov (Director of the Environmental Research Centre of Khazar University), Prof. Adil Allahverdiyev (Director of the V.Y. Akhundov Scientific Research Institute of Medical Prophylaxis), Prof. Seyyed Abolghasem Mohammadi (Professor of the School of Agriculture at University of Tabriz and director of the Iran National Wheat Innovation Centre), Prof. Tansel Çomoğlu (Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ankara University, Türkiye), and Prof. Soodabeh Davaran (Professor of the Medical University of Tabriz, Iran), delivered speeches at the session.
On the second day of the conference, the Public Health, Disease Control and Prevention Strategies session was moderated by Prof. Tansel Çomoğlu and Prof. Soodabeh Davaran. The key speakers, Prof. Ahmet Aydin (Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Toxicology, Drug, Cosmetic and director of the Medical Device R&D Laboratory (YUEF-İKTAL), Yeditepe University) Turkiye, Prof. Antonio Sarría-Santamera (Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Director, PhD in Global Health, School of Medicine, Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan), and Prof. Dr Ugur Uslu (Head of the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul Medeniyet University, Türkiye), delivered speeches at the session.
During the conference, researchers and experts from Türkiye, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Azerbaijan presented their results, expert views and perspectives.
The two-day conference on the "One Health" framework concluded by identifying critical issues and systemic barriers. These included major public health concerns regarding harmful environmental exposure affecting vulnerable groups, even at low levels. Furthermore, a critical lack of communication and collaboration between diverse environmental and health organizations is leading to severe ecological consequences in shared ecosystems. Moving forward, the conference proposed seeking funding for practical and effective ecological actions and establishing governance measures for better control and binding collaboration among organizations.
More than 70 researchers from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Iran, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Ukraine, and the Netherlands participated in the conference. A total of 24 presentations took place during the two-day conference.
Students and researchers from Khazar University, Azerbaijan Medical University, and V.Y.Akhundov National Research Institute of Medical Prophylaxis of Azerbaijan presented their research as posters during coffee breaks.
Students from the Architecture and Design department of Khazar University actively participated in the conference and presented their artworks on Climate Change and Ecosystem Health to promote nature protection.
