On October 23-25, 2019, International Conference on “Modern Problems of Mathematics and Mechanics” dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (IMM) was held at the assembly hall of the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS. The event was attended by scholars from the Scientific Community of Azerbaijan, US, Turkey, Russia, Iran, Mexico and Israel.

On the first day of the Conference, academician Dilgam Tagiyev, the Vice-president of ANAS, opened the event and congratulated the Institute staff on the anniversary and wished success to the Conference. Misir Mardanov, Director of IMM, correspondent member of ANAS, while delivering a speech, provided information on the history, directions of activity and achievements of the Institute. Later on, local scientists and foreign experts made speeches and presented their gifts. Professor Hamlet Isakhanli, member of the International Organizing Committee of the Conference, the Founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, delivered a speech at the event. Professor Hamlet Isakhanli began his speech with interesting information and considerations about mathematics, its ancient period, beginning with Euclid, the main development directions of mathematics during the Middle Ages and the 19^th and 20^th centuries, the role of mathematics in the development of other natural sciences. Then he provided extensive and interesting facts about the Azerbaijani mathematics school, which started its activity in 1925-1930, the directions of its development, the founders and leading representatives of this school, the schools they established, as well as the development of mathematics as a science in our country, the institutional cycle, which commenced with the establishment of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics in 1959. Professor Hamlet Isakhanli, while talking about the special role that the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics played in his life, he recalled that he had been sent to postgraduate studies at Moscow State University and later to the doctoral program at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics at the USSR Academy of Sciences, where he worked for nearly 20 years. By reminding that Ali Huseynli, the Head of the Mathematics Department at Khazar University, is also currently working at the Institute, he emphasized that in this sense, Khazar University's Mathematics Department is an arm of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics and thuswise expressed his gratitude for the support.

Following his speech, Professor Hamlet Isakhanli presented the Institute the Shirvan carpet, embroidered with congratulation words on the silver board, made by one of the most famous carpet weavers of the Azerbaijani carpet school, and a graphic collage in artistic style by the artist Afag Kerimova, teacher of Khazar University. The collage as in filmstrip features photos of prominent scholars from the founders of the modern Azerbaijani mathematics school up to the present time, with the phrase “Hotbed where intelligence, fantasy and hard work united” and completed with the signature of “Khazar University, Hamlet Isakhanli”.

It is worth mentioning that the employees of the Khazar University Department of Mathematics also delivered speeches at the Conference.
