On December 28, 2016, a celebration was held in Khazar University’s affiliate Dunya School’s Sumgayit branch to mark 31 December-- International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis as well as New Year. Participants in the celebration included pupils, their parents, teachers and other guests. The event announcers spoke about both holidays and their histories in Azerbaijani, English and Russian. Then Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, the founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, made a speech. 

Pupils performed poems, songs and skits in the event. They played several quiz games. Participants in the celebration also included Mehman Sharifov, Head of the Sumgayit City Culture and Tourism Board; representatives of the Sumgayit Board of Education; Alovsat Amirbeyli, Director for Public Relations and Media at Khazar University; and representatives of Dunya School in Baku. Musical performances were made by various artists, including songs on saz played by Khazar University colleagues Mehseti Jabbarova and Martha Lawry. 

At the end of the event, pupils were given New Year gifts.
