Migration and Higher Education: Developing Skills and Capacity

UNIMIG - Migration and Higher Education: Developing Skills and Capacity

Start Date:  October 15, 2012

Duration:  36 months

Brief information and main objectives:

The aim of the project is to transfer skills and competences in the interdisciplinary field of migration studies in the European Neighborhood Partnership Instrument East region, specifically in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

 The specific objectives are:

  • To develop, accredit and implement a basic curriculum for a Master Program in Migration Studies with a regional dimension in line with the Bologna requirements at Yerevan State University and Russian-Armenian University, Armenia; Khazar University and Qafqaz University, Azerbaijan; Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and Georgia Institute for Public Affairs, Georgia.
  • To establish national Migration Competence Centers (MCC) at Tbilisi State University, Yerevan State University and Khazar University that will serve as interfaces among universities, research and public institutions, governments and the public.

The Regional Online Platform on Migration, maintained and updated by the MCCs, is another important project output. It will support master students by providing relevant literature and data for research purposes and the setup of an e-Learning component. It will be widely used to disseminate the curriculum, publications, and statistical data produced by the MCCs, making all materials accessible to the wider public (migration officials, journalists, researchers, public institutions, civil society).

International Organization for Migration (IOM) Azerbaijan is participating in the project, primarily contributing to the development and implementation of the master’s programs in migration studies and MCCs.

The Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan will support the accreditation procedures in Azerbaijan and participate in capacity building activities for curriculum development in line with Bologna standards with support of EU partners.
