The Department of Western Languages was established in 1995. The principal driving factors for its establishment were tremendous social significance, a great need for highly qualified specialists equipped with professional knowledge of two different languages, and the encouragement of University policy. In 2004 the Department was renamed the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature. Courses in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian languages are offered at the Department on a regular basis.
