Long renowned for its formation of working journalists, the Department of Journalism has in recent years developed a research profile in the areas of: globalizing world and Mass Media, e-media, discourse analysis, issues of representation, culture and technology, sociology of journalism, health and science reporting, economy (oil) and journalism, and children and media. This research is being disseminated through academic journals and conferences, public talks and the popular press.

For students wishing to conduct research in the Department, our new MA in journalism studies program is designed for those interested in studying journalism from a critical, scholarly research perspective, culminating in the writing of a thesis on an original topic pertaining to journalism as an institution and a practice. The MA is not designed for those interested in becoming journalists.
