On September 19, 2016, Khazar University’s Division of Graduate Students and Research, the Department of English Language and Literature, and the Department of Azerbaijani Language and Literature held the primary defense for Narmina Fataliyeva’s doctoral dissertation (in Russian) on “The Problem of Synonymy: Linguistic and Extra-linguistic Factors Regulating the Selection of English Synonyms.” Participants in the defense included Dr. Eldar Shahgaldiyev, Head of the Division for Graduate Students and Research; Dr. Reyhan Madatova, instructor for the Department of Azerbaijani Language and Literature; Dr. Amil Jafarov, Head of the English Lexicology Department of Azerbaijan University of Languages; Dr. Farida Allahverdiyeva and Dr. Irada Nuriyeva, Instructors from Azerbaijan University of Languages; and instructors from Khazar University Department of English Language and Literature. Doctoral candidate Narmina Fataliyeva made a presentation mentioning the key functions of euphemisms in a modern society as well as social and cognitive factors that regulate the choice of euphemisms. The doctoral candidate answered the panel’s questions after the presentation.
