On May 6, a performance entitled “Shakespeare in Azerbaijan: Truth Rising from Darkness” was presented at Dunya School in honor of the 400th anniversary of great English playwright William Shakespeare’s death.
The performance was prepared by pupils and teachers of the school and included the participation of People’s Artist Alim Gasimov and Meritorious Artist Fargana Gasimova.
The performance was based on similarities and differences between East and West, including symbols, people, society, love, freedom and moral values. It highlighted similarities between characters in Shakespeare’s works and very similar earlier Eastern literary works in the background of Shakespeare’s creative activity.
Other participants in the event included Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, the founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees; Nailakhanim Isayeva, Advisor to the Board of Directors and Trustees as well as co-founder of Dunya School; Academic Isa Habibbeyli, Member of Parliament, Vice President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and Director of the Nizami Literature Institute; Professor Asif Rustamli, Division Head of the Nizami Literature Institute and Doctor of Philology; poet Ramiz Rovshan; director Ramiz Hasanoghlu; Members of Parliament; and representatives of the country’s literary society and media agencies.
